This weekend wouldn’t be as magical without the NASCAR Sprint All-Star Race. Saturday will commemorate the 27th such NASCAR All-Star Race and is sure to wow and thrill with all of your favorite drivers. Let’s take a look at a few of the notables, shall we?
Jimmie Johnson – A five-time series champ (most recently in 2010).
Jeff Gordon – A four-time series champ (most recently in 2001).
Kurt Busch – A one-time series champ (most recently in 2004) as well as the defending race champion.
Tony Stewart – Two-time series champ (most recently in 2005).
Matt Kenseth – One-time series champ (most recently in 2003).
The aforementioned five racers have all already qualified for Saturday’s All-Star Race under the “Past Champions” category. Four more drivers have qualified under the “Past Winners” category – signifying that they’ve won the event at least once in the last decade. They are:
Ryan Newman – Won the Sprint All-Star XVIII Race.
Mark Martin – Won the Sprint All-Star XXI Race.
Kasey Kahne – Won the Sprint All-Star XXIV Race.
Kevin Harvick – Won the Sprint All-Star XXIII Race.
In addition to these four racers, Kyle Busch, Denny Hamlin, Regan Smith, Trevor Bayne, Greg Biffle, Jamie McMurray, David Reutimann, Clint Bowyer, Juan Pablo Montoya and Carl Edwards have all already qualified by winning a Sprint Cup points race in either 2010 or 2011.
But as you surely already know – that’s not all! The top two finishers of the aforementioned Sprint Showdown race will automatically qualify for the All-Star Race. In addition to these top-two finishers, a driver chosen via a fan poll will also be promoted into the main-event All-Star Race.
Sometimes we take it for granted, but this coming weekend is an excellent example of just what makes NASCAR so special. If the hairs on the back of your neck are not standing up in anticipation and excitement, then you simply should not be calling yourself a NASCAR fan whatsoever.
This is what it’s all about. Now all we need to do is get through the rest of this week so we can kick back and enjoy the festivities this coming weekend. Be safe and enjoy the races!
